BARBRO WHITING
September 29, 1942 - March 10, 2012
Obituary
Barbro Whiting died Saturday, March 10, 2012. Barbro was born September 29, 1942 in Stockholm, Sweden, to Bror Herman Ferdinand and Saga Maria (Hamberg) Larsson. After finishing her schooling in Sweden, she moved to Paris, France to study at the Sorbonne. Two years later she immigrated to the United States, where she eventually met one of her fellow students from Paris. It was truly love at first sight. Barbro and Frank Brockway Whiting II married September 19, 1965, in the Episcopal Church at the English Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. Barbro was what you call a people person. She loved entertaining, serving elaborate meals for friends and family and introducing her grandchildren to Swedish foods and songs. After finishing a degree at UW-Oshkosh, she worked part-time for many years, mostly in positions that utilized her skills in foreign languages. Her favorite positions included teaching French and Swedish to adult students at UW-Fox Valley and serving as technical interpreter for French-speaking Africans at Basler Aviation in Oshkosh. She also published several articles about international travel, food and general aviation here and abroad. She loved traveling- not just to see the landmarks, but to meet the natives and learn about their culture. She visited every continent except Antarctica. Some of her other hobbies include golf (proudly getting two holes in one!), reading and crossword puzzles, plus sailing to exotic ports with her husband. Their second home, on Isle of Palms in South Carolina, was one of her favorite destinations and she belonged to the Wild Dunes Ladies Golf Association there. Barbro was an active member of Experimental Aircraft Association, volunteering as an interpreter for international pilots. She served as chairman for the International Visitors Tent and represented EAA at airshows in France and Sweden. In addition, she volunteered at the Menasha Senior Center and belonged to Alliance Francaise and Women of the World. She was a past member of the Womans Tuesday Club of Neenah, the Northshore Golf Club in Menasha and several art-related organizations. Barbro is survived by her husband of 46 years; her children: Tina (John) Pfeffer and Tripp (Jenny) Whiting, and their children: Morgan and Kennedy Pfeffer; Elizabeth and Frank Whiting; sister, Ingrid (Ragnar) Persenius; sisters-in-law: Penny (Ray) Jakubek; and Kathy Bojarski; several nieces and nephews; plus many friends around the world. She was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Hope Pfeffer; nephew, Martin Persenius; and sister-in-law, Julie Spachek. It was Barbros wishes to be cremated and have her ashes strewn across the Atlantic outside Isle of Palms, near Charleston, SC, so that she may still travel from continent to continent. To celebrate her life, a memorial will be held at Whiting Boathouse, May 2012. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the EAA Young Eagles Program or a charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank the oncology staff at Theda Clark, Appleton Medical Center, and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, for their thoughtful support and care during Barbros illness.

As one of Barbro's adult students many years ago at UW-Fox Valley, I want to express my condolences to the Whiting family. For many of us with some Swedish ancestry she provided a connection to our past and fostered the formation of the Fox Valley Swedish Society.

Thinking of you, Barbro from Arizona. These memories will be shared with the water around Stockholm on my annual May family visit.
