DOROTHY BERG

DOROTHY BERG

March 29, 1935 - March 22, 2024

Obituary

Dorothy Lois Berg (Helton) passed away peacefully on Friday, March 22, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief illness. She was born on March 29, 1935, in Goodman, WI, to Milo C. Helton and Mary Elizabeth Maude Woosencraft, and was the cherished third child of four Helton siblings. Dorothy's upbringing in Goodman laid the foundation for a life filled with love, compassion, and service.

After graduating from Goodman High School in 1953, Dorothy moved to Chicago to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse. She began her nursing career at St. Vincent's Hospital and Orphanage in downtown Chicago, where she cared for neglected and abandoned infants and children. At the same time, she worked as a nanny for a North Shore family, demonstrating her nurturing nature from the very beginning of her professional life.

In Milwaukee, Dorothy found love with Allen J. Berg, whom she had begun dating in Goodman. They were married for 64 years, creating a loving home together and raising four children. Dorothy's devotion to her family was evident in everything she did. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother, always making her home a warm and welcoming place. Her love for children extended beyond her own family, as she volunteered in the community as a Girl Scout Brownie Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, and Neenah Youth Hockey Booster.

After her children reached their teens, Dorothy embarked on a second career as a nurse, working alongside Dr. Roger Comeau and Dr. Roger Mosher at Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Even in retirement, Dorothy continued to give back, volunteering at Theda Clark Hospital in Neenah, often accompanied by Lucy, the family's therapy dog.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, Mark A. Berg, as well as her parents and siblings. She is survived by her loving husband, Allen J. Berg; son, Scott Berg; daughters, MaryAlice Berg, and Kaye Lynn Berg; daughter in-laws, Joëlle M-O Berg, Kathryn M. Berg; and her seven adoring grandchildren, Alex, Amel, Ben (Anes), Elliot, Claire, Brynn, and Grace.

A private family gathering will be held to celebrate Dorothy's life, honoring her wishes. The family extends a special thank you to Dr. Steven Knaus, Dr. Medhat Hamed, and the compassionate nurses on the 5th and 6th floors of ThedaCare – Neenah for their care and support.

Dorothy will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her love and kindness will live on in the hearts of those she touched. May she rest in peace, knowing she was loved beyond measure.

I love my Aunt Dot! She was such a beautiful soul. I love how my Dad called her Dort :) I think it was 2017 when we last went up to visit - too long ago. I remember when they came down to Alabama to visit during football season and since the Packers were not on TV here, we went to a sports bar to watch. Aunt Dot said “Brett [Favre] would want us to”. haha she was such a hoot! I love you all and I’m praying for strength and comfort for everyone.

My sincere sympathy to Alan and family. I worked with Dorothy and the Oral Surgeons when my daughters were young, and Dorothy was an incredible mentor to me and major influence in how I raised my children. Dorothy and I enjoyed collecting and displaying Department 56 Dickens Villages, so much so, that we attended the Dept. 56 get together in Minneapolis a number of times. I am currently visiting in WI and decided it was time to look up my dear friend and am very saddened now that I should have done this during last year’s visit! But, to my very special friend:  Dorothy, I will meet you again one day beyond the Pearly Gates! May you rest in God’s peace.
