JOHN DIAMOND

December 12, 1947 - May 04, 2023

Obituary

John J. Diamond, of Oshkosh died Thursday, May 4, surrounded by family. He was born on Dec 12, 1947, in Green Bay to the late John "Jack" and Iris (Suplinski) Diamond.

John graduated from Green Bay Premontre High school in 1966 and went on to receive his Bachelor's degree in mathematics from St. Norbert College and his Master's degree in mathematics from Webster College.

John served in the US Army and attained the rank of Captain. His duty eventually brought him to Seoul, South Korea, where he earned Armed Forces Expedition and National Defense Service medals.

After his service to our country, John worked as a civilian engineer for the US Army, and later as the Head of Buildings and Grounds for NWTI, Green Bay Schools, Theda Clark Hospital, and Oshkosh Schools before his retirement. After retirement he worked as an instructor at both NWTC and FVTC for several years to share his vast mechanical knowledge.

John was an avid hockey player, winning many tournaments and earning several medals in the Badger State games. He continued to play competitively into his 60's when health problems forced him to hang up the skates.

To say John was passionate about fishing would be an understatement. He was known to wear coveralls over his business suit so he could go fishing on his way to the office. He especially enjoyed fishing for walleyes, and later in life for salmon on Lake Michigan; however, he would wet a line every chance he got. He enjoyed taking people out on his boat and teaching them all he knew about the sport. He loved the camaraderie and conversation that each fishing adventure provided, which resulted in many lifelong friendships and memories on the water.

John was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill, son Bob, and Jini's parents Ursula and Bill, and brothers-in-law Craig, Paul, and Tom.

He is survived by his loving wife, caregiver, and guardian angel, Jini. John and Jini certainly made the most of their limited time together with a wonderful loving partnership.

He is further survived by his siblings Irene (George Stanic) Diamond, Nancy (Scott) Seibert, Mary (Ron) Jaseph, Patrick (Laura) Diamond, Carrie (Dave) Cedegren, and Jini's siblings John (Lucille) Mills, Laura Wood, Maggie Scharrschmidt, Christine Scharrschmidt; his sons John (Wendy), Paul (Jona), and Jeff (Dawn) Diamond; stepchildren Erik Mortensen, Amy (Pete) Wade, Kirstin (Chad) Magnuson; grandchildren Brittany (Jeremy), Brandon, Robert (Alex), Scott, Jacob, Alyssa, Carter, Annika, Kaia, Brekka, Isaiah (Alivia), Elijah, Drew, Ben, and Kyrie; and great-grandchildren Caydence, Mila, Zara, Jaxson, and Landon.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Marada, as well as Carrie and Emily from the ICU team at St. Elizabeth Hospital for their special care and compassion.

Visitation will be held from 9-10:45 a.m. Friday, June 23 at Calvary Bible Church, 1450 Oakridge Rd in Neenah. The funeral service will be held at the church at 11 a.m. followed by full military honors.

In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the United Way or your local youth hockey organization. John would want to remind you to take a kid fishing!

My condolences to the Diamond family. John was out neighbor for many years at Lake Poygan. My Father enjoyed many long visits and great conversation with John. Together they discovered my Father went to school with John's mother Iris. This was a great bonding moment and they would continue to visit often. As life changes, my Father passed and John moved on to his new life. But the memories of a great man, hockey enthusiast, and terrific fisherman will live on at Lake Poygan. Rest in peace our friend.
