KARLEEN BERG

KARLEEN BERG

September 12, 1950 - April 07, 2023

Obituary

Karleen M. Berg passed away at the age of 72 on Friday, April 7, 2023. She was born in Marshfield, Wisconsin to the late Bernard and Irene Staab. Karleen married Thomas Berg on June 29, 1973, and was blessed with two children and three grandchildren.

As an Army wife, Karleen was the anchor of a family that relocated often — including stops in South Korea, Germany, New Mexico, Virginia, Minnesota, Iowa, Oklahoma and Colorado — because of her husband's various military stations. Her can-do attitude helped the family thrive even without a true home base until moving to Neenah, Wisconsin in 1994.

She worked as a registered nurse for many years and was an operating room nurse at Theda Clark Medical Center for the final 18 years of her career, retiring in 2012. Late in her career, Karleen shifted to information technology and used her clinical experience to help implement electronic medical record software at ThedaCare. She enjoyed being a problem solver and was generous with her time, especially if her family or friends needed help. She was an avid knitter who enjoyed using her skills for charities supporting vulnerable families and children.

Karleen was a beloved mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren consider her a hero for being an organ donor. Karleen, a dedicated University of Wisconsin sports fan, was transported to the organ donation clinic  in a Badger helicopter. She treasured her time with family and friends, and she was very proud of them all.

Karleen is survived by her children, Matthew (Jennifer) Berg and Kristine (Anthony) Giornalista; grandchildren, Eleanor, Owen and Clara Berg; siblings, Mary Ann (Gary) Will, John (Carol) Staab and Jane (Rich) Bahr; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Berg; parents, Bernard and Irene Staab; and parents-in-law, Melvin and Eleanor Berg.

The funeral mass for Karleen will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, 830 S. Westhaven Drive, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. A visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Karleen will be laid to rest at Hillside Cemetery in Marshfield, Wisconsin on Friday, April 28, 2023 at 11:00 am.   In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established.

Karleen has been a dear friend since we met in nursing school. I will miss our frequent phone visits and not so frequent lunch get-togethers. She was a very special lady and so proud of her kids and grandkids. A sad loss for you, and for those of us who called her "friend." Jeanne and Larry Isaacs

Mrs. Berg, raised two wonderful children and her amazing daughter Kristine became my best friend.  I remember her smile and enthusiasm at cross country meets, and I’m pretty sure Kristine got her wit and generosity from her mom.   Mrs. Berg’s dedication to her family, friends, and community is admirable and inspires me to do more.  So much love sent to you Kristine, Anthony, Matt and your families.  Matt your kids sure did have a hero for a Grandmother.

Precious memories of our children playing together in the neighborhood near Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, friendship as a fellow Army wife. We kept in touch through the years. Such a gracious lady, loving mother and grandmother. Her faith sustained her through life’s ups and downs. I will miss you, Karleen.
