JOHN NICHOLSON

John L. Nicholson, 99, of Neenah, WI, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on December 9, 2024.

Born on May 26, 1925, in Byron, MI, John was the 5th child out of eight siblings of the late Leonard and Bertha (Raddatz) Nicholson. He grew up in a modest farming family in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where his natural curiosity and talents earned him the nickname “The Professor”—a title his siblings embraced as fitting.

John proudly served his country as an Army veteran during the Korean War in 1951 and 1952. Over his long and varied career, he worked as a truck driver, factory worker, construction laborer in quarry operations, and for many years as a dedicated member of the Operating Engineers Local 139. Beyond his professional endeavors, John was a resourceful man, known for his ability to fix anything and his love of working on cars.

He is preceded in death by his son, David Nicholson, and other cherished family members. John is survived by his children: Marlene Rodgers of Neenah, WI; Steven (Mary) Nicholson of Gulf Breeze, FL; and Joan (David) Allen of Bend, OR. He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Nicole Rodgers (Todd Blickenstaff) of Dallas, TX; Angela (Andrew) Millan of Armstrong Creek, WI; Steffanie (Branden) Christensen of Neenah, WI; and Cody Allen of Bend, OR.

John had a unique way of connecting with his family, often using affectionate nicknames that reflected his playful personality. He gave out the best nicknames such as “Smiley”, “Freckles”, “Sweetpea”, “Sarge”, the “Big Guy”, “Horsey Girl” and most famously, “Rebel”, to those he loved. He proudly passed on that legacy to his family. His rebellious spirit, paired with his sharp sense of humor, made him a one-of-a-kind father and since “Grandpa” was not allowed, he nicknamed himself “Great Dad”.

In his later years, John's favorite moments often involved time with family—whether tending his front yard garden, feeding “his” favorite robin, bunny and squirrel, watching westerns on TV, or visiting his favorite restaurant, Golden Corral. He lived life entirely on his terms—a testament to his independent, stubborn and resilient nature.

John wanted his family to celebrate his life by cherishing the good times they shared. His enduring laughter and “Rebel” spirit will forever remain in everyone's hearts.
