PATRICIA GALLOWAY

Patricia Wheeler Galloway, 89, died peacefully, in her sleep, at home with her family. Pat was born in Michigan, ND and raised in Duluth, MN. Her parents were Esther Honett Wheeler and Amasa Ellsworth Wheeler. She graduated from St. Scholastica High School in Duluth and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Lawrence College, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and chosen as a beauty queen four years in a row. She was voted "Best Loved" her last year at Lawrence. Pat married Richard Pierce Galloway in 1947 and they raised 8 children. She was a band mother, a Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout den mother, and volunteered as a lunch mother at St. Mary School. She and her husband Dick were members of Stagefrights, a play reading group. She was also a member of the team that brought the Heckrodt Nature Center and the Trestle Trail Bridge from dreams to reality. Pat served on the Menasha Library Board and the VNA Board and volunteered as a guide at Mosquito Hill Nature Center. She enjoyed skiing, sailing, golf, and the opera and had a passion for nature; birds were her specialty. She passed her love of nature on to her children. Pat loved her children deeply and always kept her heart open, no matter what. She was fortunate to be able to travel while she was in good health to amazing places including the Holy Land and Africa; Paris, London and Florence; Greece, Australia and New Zealand. She skied in Austria, sailed in the Caribbean, and cruised the coast of Norway. She treasured the waterfront home she shared with Dick. Together they enjoyed beautiful views, many birds and waterfowl and sunset cruises on their pontoon boat. As they grew older they shared their boat and their good fortune with friends. Pat especially, made sure to include their single women friends in social activities. She is survived by her husband Richard "Dick" Galloway; her sister Betty Wheeler Buchanan (Duluth); and six children: Christine Galloway with her partner Rebecca Brown (Seattle); Richard P. "Rick" Galloway (Phoenix); Andy Galloway with his wife Mary (Gardiner, MT); Dr. Susan Galloway with her husband Tom Portle (Madison); Rebecca Galloway with her husband Richard Schmeck (Seattle); and Joseph Galloway (Seattle); 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Mark and Matthew. A memorial service and celebration of Pat's life will be held at St. Patrick's Church, Menasha, on Friday April 25 at 11AM. Bishop Robert Morneau will preside. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 at the church. Pat's family would like to thank Dr. Steve Knaus for his care and understanding. They would also like to thank Theda Care at Home and Hospice and VNA Home Care. They made it possible for Pat to stay at home with her family.
