Gary Gunderson

February 19, 1947 - December 14, 2025

Obituary

Gary Douglas Gunderson, 78, of Menasha, WI, passed away surrounded by his immediate family on Sunday, December 14, 2025. Gary was truly one of a kind. Most loved him; some didn’t. Those who did, knew and loved his humor and larger-than-life personality, and those who didn’t clearly missed out on a lot of fun. If you were one of the few that weren’t a fan, feel free to skip the full obituary below.

Gary was born on February 19, 1947, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, the son of Doug and Mary Gunderson. In the early 1950s, Gary moved with his family to Menasha, a community that helped shape his life and values.

Gary lived his life first and foremost for his family and community, leaving those he encountered in a better place. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather (Bapa), his greatest pride and joy were found in his beloved wife, Judy, their children, and grandchildren. Together, Gary and Judy built a home full of love, laughter, and unwavering support. He led his family with steady guidance, humility, humor, and deep-rooted values that will continue to guide future generations.

Gary proudly served his country in the Vietnam War and carried lifelong gratitude for the freedoms he cherished. A man of faith, he served God, his family, and his country with humility, generosity, and strength. His life was defined not by words, but by consistent action—showing up, giving back, and leading by example.

He had an entrepreneurial spirt and spent 65 years in the commercial laundry and dry-cleaning industry.  It was a lifetime defined by dedication, pride, and a genuine love for his work and the people that worked with him. He often spoke with gratitude about learning the business from his father and took pride in working alongside and mentoring his children.

Kind, brave, and smart, Gary paired purpose-driven leadership with a fun sense of humor. He had a rare ability to make people feel seen and valued through conversation, shared laughter, or simply showing up with care and consistency. Those who knew him were better for it and he will be deeply missed.

Gary is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy Gunderson; his children Sara Gunderson (grandchildren Sam, Ella, and Jack Hawkins); Doug Gunderson and his wife Corrin (grandchildren Lily and Calvin); and Greg Gunderson and his wife Amy (grandchildren Graden and Norah); his sister Johnette Gunderson along with other relatives, colleagues, and dear friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas and Mary Gunderson; his brother Bill Jones and his wife Betsy (children Eric and Amy)

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church, 900 Geiger Street, Neenah, WI 54956, immediately followed by military honors. I worked for Gary for 20 years and have known him for 40 years. I always had the greatest respect for him. He loved his family and the Neenah- Menasha community. We would have many discussions about life (and casinos). He was a dear friend. I will miss you Gary. Pete and I give our sympathy to Judy and his family.

I have fond memories of "gunner" from our years at Xavier HS. He was part of the Neenah - Menasha contingent while was from Kimberly. He played Grade School FB for my Uncle Fritz. As I recall he was the successor to Rocky Bleier at XHS. Glad that he had a full life. My prayers for his family and him.

I only recently met Gary and his wife, Judy a few years ago while touring Gary’s plants and laundries And being invited to their lovely weekend home. He made such an impression on my husband, Amin and myself. He is someone who truly cares about the welfare of his family and friends. I know he will be sorely missed. He leaves a great legacy in his children and family. Prayers for you all.

To Judy and Kids, I broke out into tears when I heard of Gary's death. Gary was bigger than life itself. I treasured my friendship with Gary with so many wonderful memories. There are no words that I can say to ease your heart felt pain. The only words, I can say to honor Gary are, "HE WILL BE MISSED!" by all.

As a classmate of Gary we could never be surprised by his banter and antics. The life of the party... I wonder if Heaven is ready for how lively he will make it! Sending hugs to Judy and family
