Obituary
Darleen J. Gilbertson, 89, of Oshkosh, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of September 2, 2026. She was born October 11, 1936, to Rubert and Judith (Anderson) Sommer. Darleen married the love of her life, Laroy Gilbertson, on December 23, 1955, in Neenah. Together, they made their home in Neenah, where they raised their four children and built a lifetime of memories. Laroy preceded her in death in July 2020.
Darleen had a special way of knowing what she wanted from an early age. She often told the story that when she met Laroy in fourth grade, she announced that she was going to marry him someday. She was true to her word, and the two shared nearly 65 years of marriage.
Darleen was a longtime member of Martin Luther Church and spent much of her working life caring for others. She worked as an LPN in telemetry at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center, where she dedicated herself to helping those in her care.
After retirement, Darleen and Laroy enjoyed spending time at their cottage in Suring, where they created many happy memories. She was also a member of the Merry Makers Dance Club and enjoyed the friendships and good times shared through the club.
Darleen found joy in many simple, creative pleasures. She loved cooking and canning, and her applesauce and wines were especially beloved by her family. She enjoyed making ornaments and beadwork and spent time sharing her talents with others. She was also a 4-H leader, taking great pride in encouraging young people and helping them discover their own interests and abilities.
Above all, Darleen cherished her family. She will be deeply missed by her children, Bryan (Lynn) Gilbertson, Laurie (Dave) Fashingbauer, Debora (Rick) Burt, and David (Melissa) Gilbertson; her grandchildren, Derek Gilbertson, Andrea Gilbertson, Kyle (Amber) Gilbertson, Melissa Burt, Tanya Burt, and Kevin Burt; and her great-grandchildren, Skyler, Amara, Willow Gilbertson, and Olivia Burt.
She was preceded in death by her father, Rupert Sommer; mother, Judith Hanson; and step-father, Russell Hanson.
A funeral service for Darleen will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, September 11, 2026 at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, 436 S. Lake St. A visitation will be held at church from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service. Darleen will join Laroy at Oak Hill Cemetery in Neenah.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in her name.
