ALMA NIELSON

Alma L. Nielson, of Neenah, age 86, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 1, 2014 at Cherry Meadows Hospice. She was born March 9, 1928 in Deerbrook, WI, daughter of the late Rick and Lisetta (Fisher) Berg. Alma graduated from Antigo High School and then from UW-Stevens Point. She married Wayne "Ted" Nielson on June 12, 1954 in Elcho, WI. They were happily married for 60 years. She was a loving mother to their daughter, Kristine and had a sweet, caring nature that touched everyone who knew her. She taught Elementary School for 36 years; 21 of those in Neenah. Alma was actively involved in the Gifted and Talented Program, a pioneer in environmental education and awarded Teacher of the Year in Neenah. Alma was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Neenah where she was active in their Esther Circle for many years. After their retirement, Alma and Ted enjoyed spending the winter months in Clearwater Beach, FL for almost 20 years. She also was a longtime Packer fan, becoming an owner and season ticket holder. Alma's hobbies included sewing, gardening, snowmobiling and lover of the outdoors. She and Ted started a tree farm from seedlings in Clintonville. She loved being Grandma to Katie and spending time with her family at "The Farm" in Deerbrook. Alma was known to family and friends as a famously talented cook. Survivors include her husband, Ted Nielson; a daughter, Kris Nielson; a granddaughter, Katie Nielson; two sisters: Lenore Strommen, Emilie Scheerenberger; and a brother-in-law, Owen (Elaine) Nielson. Alma was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Berg; and two brothers-in-law: Rollie Strommen, Dick Scheerenberger. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM on Thursday, September 4, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church, 108 W. Doty Ave., Neenah, with The Rev. Mark Geisthardt and Rev. Tony Fuller officiating. The visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 AM until the hour of service. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
