Susan Nolls
April 16, 1950 - September 19, 2025
Obituary
Susan Poole Nolls, daughter of Joseph Blanton Nolls and Amy Fay (Walters) Nolls, entered into eternal rest on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the age of 75. Born Sunday, April 16, 1950, in Seattle, Washington, she graced the world with her presence and brought joy to all who knew her. Susan pursued her education at Washington State University and Gallaudet University, where she cultivated her passion for social work, earning multiple Master’s Degrees.
She later made her home in Jacksonville, Illinois, where she dedicated much of her career to the Illinois School for the Deaf and an independent living center, making many cherished friendships along the way. Known for her kindness, compassion, and empathy, Susan made a lasting impact through her work with adults with disabilities. It was at Gallaudet University that Susan met her dear friend Patsy Vetger, whom she has shared countless life experiences and fond memories with. The two bonded together as roommates- both being divorced and hard of hearing. Susan had a love for animals, so much so that she was involved in the development of a dog park. Her beloved dog Sabrina was a very important part of her life, as well as the other pets she loved throughout her lifetime. She also loved gardening - growing up, she kept a vegetable garden with her mom. While living in Jacksonville, she had a lavish garden in her yard. After moving to the area in Menasha, she still kept her vegetable garden going in planters and pots.
Susan was very active in the Lion's Club in Jacksonville, as well as a proud member of the Women of the Friday Night Fish Fry club and devoted member of the First United Methodist Church in Neenah, WI. Among her love of all people, animals, and nature, she also loved taking road trips with Patsy and Patsy's cousin Marina. The 'three amigos' ventured to Colorado to visit Susan’s sister Paula and Patsy’s cousins. They enjoyed another road trip to Sauk Centre, Minnesota, to visit Patsy's aunt. Music and fellowship also played a big role in her life; she participated in choir and bell choir, and she built strong people connections wherever she went. Deafness never held her back, and she embraced every opportunity to live fully and joyfully.
Susan is survived by her sister Paula Nolls, her brother Michael (Brigette) Nolls, members of the Poole family, a step-sister, and her friend Patsy Vetger.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial service for Susan will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at First United Methodist Church, 108 W Doty Ave, Neenah, WI, with visitation starting at 12:30pm until the time of service at 2:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are appreciated to First United Methodist Church, Neenah, as well as Gallaudet University, Washington, D.C.
In her quiet departure, Susan is mourned by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her memory will be cherished by her family, friends, colleagues, and the countless lives she touched along her remarkable journey. May she rest in eternal peace, her spirit forever embraced by the love and gratitude of those she leaves behind.
