ROLAND MARMES

Roland G. Marmes, age 97 of Neenah, passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2012. He was born on November 23, 1914 in Neenah, WI, son of John Marmes and Agnes (Guyette) Marmes-Wolf. Roland married Helen (Blank) Marmes on July 23, 1937 in her familys Neenah home. Roland and Helen enjoyed over 72 years of married life before Helen passed away two years ago on January 12, 2010. Roland worked for Kimberly-Clark for over 40 years, retiring about 35 years ago. Rolly also worked for Mrs. John Nelson Bergstrom and then later for the museum she donated. He also sold and installed steps for Valley Unit Step Company, and for years filled in for the postal service at Christmas time. When Rolly was not working, he had a number of interests. He was an avid and talented golfer. He did score two Holes-in-1 over his many years behind the clubs. Rolly did a lot of fishing, bird hunting, and deer hunting. He also liked to play cards and was super at cribbage. Rolly and Helen also spent a lot of time at auctions and collecting antiques. He also enjoyed all travels and cruises. He spent many of his winters in Estero, FL. Roland was told that he was the eldest member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Neenah. He is survived by his five children: Monica Charles, Neenah; Betsy (Hank) Nametz, CA; Charleen (Jim) Bach, New Berlin; Jeffery Marmes, Langlade; and Mark Marmes, Neenah; 10 grandchildren: Lowell (Sue) Bennett; Brady (Chris) Bennett; Andy Nametz; Mike Nametz; Chris (Carrie) Martin; Bonnie (Mark) Voss; Beth (Randy) Perdue; Jeffery (Karen) Marmes, Jr.; Cathy (Steve) Swoboda; and Jessica Wepner; 13 great-grandchildren: Chase Bennett; Braison, Season, and Jurnee Bennett; Chantel and Cienna Martin; Braden and Brooke Peterson; Alex Perdue; Holly (Kyle) Smith; Bryson Marmes; Adam and Katie Swoboda; and one great-great-granddaughter, Emma Smith. He is also survived by his sister, Claire Marx; sister-in-laws, Doris Dode Zenefski and Arlene Mully Blank; also his favorite cousin, Eleanor Sprague, as well as by many nieces and nephews and his helpers at the VNA. Besides his loving wife Helen, Roland was preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes; and a brother, Loran Marmes, Sr.; his wifes parents, Charles and Hilda Blank; brother and sister-in-laws: Norb Marx; Vera Ehrlich; Paul and Mary Jean Serwas; Norbert Nubs Zenefski; Melvin Sonny Blank; as well as son-in-laws Don Tipton and Ralph Charles; daughter-in-law, Leslie Marmes; and grandson, Andrew Martin. A funeral service for Roland will be held Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 200 N. Commercial St., Neenah. The visitation will be at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Neenah.
