HUGH NOLIN

Hugh Travers Nolin, a Neenah resident since 1969, died on Saturday, October 12th, at Emerald Court, Valley VNA, after a long battle with vascular dementia. The son of Albert and Gertrude Nolin, Hugh was born February 15, 1933, in Auburn, New York, and grew up in Skaneateles, New York. He graduated from Skaneateles High School prior to attending Dartmouth College on a Naval ROTC scholarship where he was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity. He graduated with many of his lifelong friends as part of the Dartmouth class of 54. Following his graduation, Hugh was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy and attended flight school in Pensacola, Florida until he suffered a serious accident and was retired from the Navy in 1956. He married Deborah Graves, his fianc who left Smith College to nurse him back to health, that same year and went to work for Reigel Paper Corporation. In 1969, he moved to Neenah with Kimberley Clark where he worked until he retired in 1999. An avid sailor from his childhood on Lake Skaneateles and later on with the Pequot Yacht Club in Southport, Connecticut and the Neenah-Nodaway Yacht Club on Lake Winnebago, Hugh was regarded as an exceptionally competent navigator and a sought-after racing teammate. Hugh served several terms as a senior warden at St Thomas Church as well taking on the role of assistant treasurer for the Diocese of Fond du Lac. He is survived by Debby, his wife of 57 years; his daughters Elizabeth (Roger) Hunt, Anne Nolin (Steve Drake) and Sarah Bond (Julian Forsyth); his grandchildren Kate, Annie and Nicholas Tagge and Seth Drake, as well as brother-in-law Jim Graves and his wife Kitty and sisters-in-law Nancy Graves and Sue Nolin and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Barry. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 17th, 4:00 PM. At St. Thomas Church, 226 Washington St., Menasha, with The Rev. Ralph Osborne officiating. The visitation will be held at the church from 3:00 PM until the hour of service. Donations may be made in his memory to St Thomas Church, Dartmouth College, or Valley VNA.
