ARTHUR SCHMITTING

Arthur J. Art Schmitting, of Menasha, age 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home on Monday, January 30, 2012. He was born October 20, 1931 in Hilbert, son of the late Arthur Sr. and Kathryn (Horness) Schmitting. Art married Wynogene Wyn Bettner on August 10, 1957 at Evangelical Reformed Church in Potter. He was a Menasha resident the last 49 years. Art grew up on his parents farm outside of Hilbert and graduated from Hilbert High School in 1949 where he earned a varsity letter in baseball. He joined the Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge he gained employment with Pasewald Electric of Hilbert. Art went to technical school to add to his training as an Electrician, and was hired by Superior Electric of Appleton where he spent several years. The opportunity to go into partnership with Dick Evansen to form Valley Electric was an adventure he loved. After more than twenty successful years, Art and Dick sold their business. He was proud to finish his career back with Superior Electric. He made countless friends during this time. Art was known for helping many people with their electrical troubles day or night. Arts family was the most important thing to him. Arts children and grandchildren have diverse interests and attending any of their events was a priority. Art had a special spot in his heart for each of his grandchildren, and a twinkle in his eye for his great-grandson. A favorite pastime was putzing at his childrens homes making sure everything was running right. He also enjoyed golfing and bowling. He was a fan of the Badgers, the Brewers, the Packers, and Duke Basketball. He also treasured traveling to different historical locations in the U.S. Art was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Menasha where he shared his skills as an electrician. Art retained his membership in the American Legion Kupsch-Brockman Post 127 of Hilbert for over fifty years. During his many illnesses these past years he remained optimistic and warmed those around him with his beautiful smile. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Survivors include his wife, Wyn; four children: Kathryn Quiriconi (special friend Dave), Richmond, VA, Kevin (Lynn) Schmitting, Neenah, Kreg (Amy) Schmitting, Menasha, Kari Schwab (special friend Kevin), Menasha; 11 grandchildren: Addie Schmitting (special friend Bob), Greta (Jake) Taxis, Johnathon Schmitting, Zachariah Quiriconi, Natalie Schmitting, Carly Schmitting, Rebekah Quiriconi, Derek Schmitting, Ryan Schmitting, Jordan Schmitting, and Alexis Schwab; and a great-grandson, Arthur AJ Woerpel; a brother, Willard (Betty) Schmitting, Sheboygan, a sister, Carol (Lowell) Matthies, Appleton; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Schmitting, Hilbert; six brothers and sisters-in-law: Gloria Brehmer, Vi Bettner, Shelly Bettner, Lyndoris Jandrey, Dennis Bettner, Stanford Bettner. Art was preceded in death by two brothers: Dick Schmitting and John Schmitting; a sister-in-law, Judy Bettner; and two brothers-in-law: Earl Brehmer and Normal Jandrey. The funeral service for Art will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 300 Broad St., Menasha, with Rev. Steve Billings officiating. The visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials for Special Olympics, the Diabetes Foundation and American Cancer Society are being established in his name. The family would like to thank Theda Care at Home Hospice, Dr. Timothy Goggins, Jenny Greiner and all of the staff of Fox Valley Hematology and Oncology, his friend Harry, and all of the neighbors for their help.
