EDWIN GALLOWAY

Edwin John Ned Galloway was born on June 6, 1921 in Fond du Lac, WI, the son of Edwin Pierce and Genevieve Gruenheck Galloway. Ned was a graduate of Goodrich High School in Fond du Lac and Lawrence University in Appleton. He also attended the Universities of Idaho and Wyoming, courtesy of the U.S. Army. He later received a Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. His final assignment was in the Philippines were he befriended the company mascot, an Akita puppy named Flip. Since Filipinos equate dog with dinner Ned would not return to the States until (with a lot of help) he could bring Flip with him. In 1950 he married Carol Ziska in Long Branch, N.J., and they were blessed with five children. This past December Ned and Carol celebrated their 60th anniversary. During his professional career, Ned served as Secy. Treas. and Chief Engineer at Galloway Co., a dairy in Neenah, WI. While there, he received several patents, including one for the Tru-Test aseptic sampler which remains the standard for insuring quality in the pharmaceutical and diary industries. Ned was active in Boy Scouting; first as an Eagle Scout and later as a volunteer and a Scout Master, and was awarded the Silver Beaver. He served as a chairman for the Neenah-Menasha Community Chest (now the United Way). He was a life long blood donor, and had surpassed the ten-gallon level when medications ended his contributions. For years he served as the family representative on the board of the Fond du Lac County Historical Society/Galloway House and Village. He would return from meetings marveling at the dedication of the members. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Menasha, where for decades he sang in the choir. He also enjoyed music in many other ways. In his younger years he sang with a barbershop quartet. He played the violin, trombone, ukulele, and especially an 1870 Sohner piano inherited from his grandmother. Whenever he could, he attended concerts, especially classical. Among other things he particularly enjoyed doing were serving as an alumni advisor to the members of Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Lawrence, and planting trees on what he called his four-acre sandbox on the north shore of Lake Winnebago. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bruce; a sister, Mary Galloway James; a daughter-in-law, Mary Stumpf; two brothers-in-law, G. William Bill and Philip Ziska; three nephews; and other friends and relatives. He is survived by his wife, Carol; his children and their families: E. Jeffrey Galloway, Tod, Robyn, and Sara Galloway; Jenny Galloway, Miguel Colon and Ana Colon-Galloway; Cyndy Galloway, Peter Fisher and Kathryn and Claire Galloway. He is further survived by: brothers John and his family, and Richard Dick and his family, sister, Jean G. Erickson and her family, and brother-in-law, David James and his family. Cremation (at Neds request) has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Menasha, with Fr. Paul Paider officiating. The visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service. A reception will follow the service at Touchmark on Prospect, 2601 Touchmark Dr., Appleton. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Lawrence University, St. John the Baptist Church, or the Fond du Lac County Historical Society.
