CAROL DRESSER

Carol E. Dresser, of Appleton, passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2011 at her home on Stroebe Island. She was born March 25, 1931, in Winnetka, IL, the daughter of the late George Frederic and Martha (Spink) Leichsenring. Carol was baptized, confirmed and married in the Wilmette English Lutheran Church, Wilmette, IL. Carol attended the Winnetka Public Schools, graduating from New Trier Township High School in 1948. She matriculated to Lawrence College (now University) in Appleton, where she met her future husband, Bill Dresser, and they celebrated 60 years together. After their marriage, Carol worked for seven years in the accounting department of Marathon Corp. (later American Can), before retiring to raise her family. Carol was very involved in community affairs. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at her church, volunteered as a remedial reading aide at Taft Elementary School and in the libraries at Conant Junior High School and Armstrong high School. She was a troop organizer, consultant, Area Chairman, Troop Leader, Troop Committee Chairman, on the board of the Fox River Area Girl Scout Council and on various council committees for many years. Carol was very interested in the arts and was Chairman of the Friends of the Bergstrom-Mahler Art Museum and served nine years on the Board of Directors, eight of them as Secretary. She was a Past President of the Fox Valley Symphony League and served on its Board as Treasurer and Member-at-Large for many years. Carol loved music and had season tickets for the Fox Valley Symphony, the Florentine Opera of Milwaukee and the Lyric Opera in Chicago. She also enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to two clubs. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing golf and dancing. Carol was also interested in wildlife and the environment and served on the Board of the Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve for many years. She was a Past President of the Neenah-Menasha Federated Womens Club and a Past President of the Neenah Womens Tuesday Club, as well as a past Board Member of Oshkoshs 20th Century Club. Carol was active in St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Menasha where she was a Licensed Chalice Bearer, Lector and served as a counter for over twenty years. She was also active in the Masonic Womens Orders and served as a Past Matron of the Eastern Star, Past President of the Social Order of the Bureaucrat and Queen of the Nile. She was also an office in the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and a 60-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Carol is survived by two daughters: Susan (Bruce) Marshall, Phillips, WI, and Mary Dresser, Walland, TN; an A.F.S. daughter, Monica (Ronald) Birks, Asuncion, Paraguay; three grandchildren: Andy Marshall, Tanzania, Africa, Will Marshall, Milwaukee and Phillips, WI, and Maureen Marshall, Phillips, WI; a brother, George (Ardis) Leichsenring, Oak Ridge, TN; a sister-in-law, Pat (Doug) Wiatrowski, Menasha; a brother-in-law, Bob (Imogene) Raddu, Powell, TN; and several nieces and nephews, one of whom, Nicole (Ray) Raddu Ferry, Glen Burnie, MD, is her goddaughter. Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; a brother, James (Grace) Leichsenring; and a sister-in-law, Caroline Raddu Felde. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 226 Washington St., Menasha, with Fr. Ralph Osborne officiating. The visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the hour of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve, the Dresser Family Scholarship Fund at Lawrence University, the Fox Valley Symphony, Shriners Children Hospital, St. Thomas Episcopal Church or the charity of your choice.
