Obituary
Susan Barbara Carpenter, age 87, passed away on September 27, 2023. She was born May 15, 1936, in Neenah, WI, daughter of the late Robert and Thelma Schwartz. On September 8, 1956, she was united in marriage to Alvin Carpenter in the same church she was baptized in. Susan graduated from Menasha High School and went on to get a degree in Early Childhood Education, her focus was on teaching special needs children, ages 3 to 7. Her love of these children was evident, and the love they gave her was joyous, Susan called their hugs, “special hugs from God”.
Susan also founded a day care center at the University of Wisconsin here in the Valley and worked with children. Her love of “special children” continued, as she worked and volunteered for ARC of Neenah Menasha earning many awards.
Susan then went back to school so she could work at the Mental Health Clinic in Neenah. She became their outreach worker, and worked and volunteered at Friendship Place, a drop-in center for the mentally ill. She loved her position, and her smile would light up the room. She was always happy when working with people of all ages. She was definitely a “people person” with a smile and a bright hello to everyone. After retiring, Susan then volunteered for the Salvation Army, St. Joseph's food pantry, and Arc.
Susan and Al had two children, Lisa and Shawn. Susan was preceded in death by her husband Al, and daughter Lisa. Susan is survived by her son, Shawn and daughter-in-law Amy from Shoreview, MN; grandsons: Sam (Jillian), and Ben from Minnesota; two brothers: Bill from Appleton, WI; and Robert (Barbara) Schwartz from Estes Park, CO; twin sisters, Leah and Linda Schwartz from Appleton, WI.
Susan will be remembered from her beautiful smile, sunny disposition, and her dedication to “special children and adults”. She will also be remembered for her love of the Packers, Door County, Univ. of Wisconsin football, breakfasts and lunches with friends, her dog Callie, and of course Peanut Butter.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Make A Wish Foundation or The Salvation Army. Susan was an advocate of organ donation and always urged others to do the same.
A special thanks to her sisters, Leah and Linda and her brother, Bill for all their help. Per Susan's requests there will be no formal services.
