SOPHIE SURMACZ

Sophie Surmacz passed away on Friday, September 18, 2009 at Valley VNA in Neenah, formerly of Ridgeview Highlands in Appleton. Sophie was born in Wilmerding, PA on October 13, 1913 to Andrew and Tillie (Rymar) Surmacz. She spent the majority of her life in McKeesport, PA, moving to Appleton, WI at the age of 90 to be near family. She had a long career as an Industrial Nurse for U.S. Steel National Works in McKeesport, PA. After retiring, she volunteered at the local hospitals and political polls. She was a member of St. Marys Catholic Church of McKeesport and belonged to various professional organizations. She was also an active member of the Parkview Community Credit Union board from 1980-2003. She is survived by her nieces Jo Ellen (Gerald) Andersen, Neenah, Nancy (Gary) Ringler, Plano, TX, Carol (Steven) Millen, Oconomowoc, WI, Audrey (Richard) Johnson, Los Angeles, CA and Sharon (Steve) Davis, Conway, AR, and many great nieces and nephews. Sophie was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Joe and his wife Margaret, and her lifelong companion, George Kovaly. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in McKeesport, PA. Her family is grateful to the caring staff of Theda Care at Home Hospice and the compassionate staff at Valley VNA.
