HARRY COLGAN

Harry Joseph Colgan, MD, passed away peacefully at his home in Neenah, WI on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at the age of 95. Harry was born in Pittsburgh, PA on September 27, 1918, son of the late Harry and Theresa Scanlon Colgan. He was the oldest of the 5 Colgan children, which included brothers James and Tom and sisters Margie and Helen. Harry attended Central Catholic High School and graduated in 1936. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1940 from the University of Pittsburgh and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1944. Harry met the love of his life Mabel Simboli while working at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, PA. They married June 17, 1944 and lived a rich full loving life together for 67 years. They raised 4 adoring children together, Susan, Ray, Karin and Kathy. He did his medical internship at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA Oct., 1945 - July, 1946 and specialty training at the School of Military Neuropsychiatry, New York University, Bellevue Hospital, NYC Sept. - Nov. 1945. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Medical Administrative Corps - Army of the United States on July 10, 1942 achieving the rank of Captain. During this time, he worked as a resident Psychiatrist at 317th US Station Hospital Neuropsychiatric Center; US Air Base Wiesbaden, Germany and served at the famous Nuremburg War Crimes Trials as one of the chief psychiatrists that worked with the prisoners. He had further residency training at the Institute of Living, Hartford, CT and Veterans Administration Hospital, Downey, IL. Dr. Colgan moved the family to Winnebago, Wisconsin in 1950 and worked at Winnebago County Hospital as Clinical Director for nine years. In 1959 he opened a private psychiatric practice in Neenah, WI and served the community until his retirement in 1987. He was a kind and gentle man and was well respected by his patients. Even after retirement, Dr. Colgan worked at different locum tenens positions as a contract psychiatrist at hospitals around the country. He did this into his 80's. Harry and his wife, Maye very much enjoyed these travels and adventures throughout the country. Harry loved the practice of medicine. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Winnebago, County Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, and on the staff of Theda Clark Hospital. Above all else Dr. Colgan was a family man and enjoyed spending time with his four children, seven grandchildren. and 2 great-grandsons. Harry was preceded in death by his beloved wife Maye Simboli in 2011, his parents, Harry and Theresa Colgan, brother James and sisters, Margie and Helen. He is survived by three daughters: Sue Walgenbach (Thomas), Carmel, CA, Karin Bargsten (Bruce), Franklin, TN, and Kathy Jamieson (Charles), Madison, WI; son, Raymond, Neenah, WI; seven grandchildren: Lisa Walgenbach Cornehl (Kevin), Hermosa Beach, CA, Amy Walgenbach Udelson, (Steve) San Francisco, CA, Emma Jamieson, Chicago, IL and Sam Jamieson, Madison, WI, Brad Bargsten, Andrew Bargsten and Lily Bargsten, Franklin, TN; great-grandsons Carter and Harrison Cornehl, Hermosa Beach, CA; brother, Tom Colgan, Pittsburgh, PA; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bev and Dan McFadden, Berkeley, CA; and by beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. The memorial service will be held starting at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2014, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Neenah, WI. Entombment will be at Shrine of Heaven Mausoleum, Neenah, WI. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the University of Pittsburgh Medical School Harry J.
