SYLVESTER MICHALKIEWICZ

Sylvester B. Michalkiewicz, age 94 of Appleton, died suddenly Monday, October 25, 2010. He was born December 31, 1915 to the late Frank and Bernice (Schreiber) Michalkiewicz in Menasha. On April 3, 1964, he married Jane Hesselman who preceded him in death on September 2, 2010. Syl was a proud veteran having served in the Philippines and New Guinea from 1941 to 1945. In 1976 He retired from American National Can and was very active in the community. In 1990, he was voted the Red Cross Volunteer of the Year and served as the Red Cross Disaster Services Chairman from 1986 to 1992. Syl was also an outdoor man, enjoying his Canadian fishing trips and playing many rounds of golf. On July 2, 1988, Syl scored his first hole-in-one at Ridgeway Golf Course at the age of 72. He also enjoyed playing poker with his friends and watching football and golf on TV, as well as painting. Syl is survived by a sister, Bernice Vogt; sister-in-law, Marie Michalkiewicz; sister-in-law, Sue (Jim) Lenz; and brother-in-law, Harland (Elma) Hesselman. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane; sister, Marcella Viene; brothers: John, Joseph, Edward, Frank, Raymond, and Clarence Michalkiewicz; brothers-in-law: Jack Hesselman, Donald Breezy Hesselman; and sister-in-law Carol (Bill) Haselow. A memorial service for Syl will be held Friday, October 29, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at First Presbyterian Church of Neenah, Rev. Richard Moore officiating. Visitors are encouraged to visit after the service. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church or American Red Cross in Syls name.
