Obituary
Ms. Phyllis Cuming Desjardins, age 70, passed away Friday January 22 at Appleton Medical Center following a brief illness.
Phyllis was born on October 10, 1945 in Bridgeport CT to Aloisius and Rose (Bouchard) Sutula. She was a graduate of Northeastern University and Sacred Heart University. She worked as a chemist for Owens Corning Fiberglass and Pitney Bowes for many years in their research and development departments, where she invented and patented several specialty inks.
In recent years Phyllis was very active in her church, St. Thomas in Menasha WI, volunteering in their Double Portions soup kitchen weekly. She was incredibly humbled to have recently been nominated for the churches Vestry, and had sincerely hoped to serve God and her church in that manner as well.
She was an avid camper who was always up to try a new adventure, she crocheted blankets, hats and mittens for several charities, a creative soul with a passion for what she called “engineering solutions.” She loved to celebrate life's moments, big and small, with her many friends and family members. She will be sorely missed.
She lived a full and active life, on her own terms, right to the very end, and she looked forward to reuniting with her mother and the love of her life William Cuming in the next life.
She leaves behind a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Jennifer Cuming, of Manitowoc WI, a daughter and son-in-law, Anna and John Richards, of Watertown, CT, her sisters, Valerie Jensen and Loretta Sutula of Woonsocket RI, Catherine Nault of Harrisville RI, and Marian Brodt of N. Smithfield RI, as well as four grandsons that were the light of her life and what she considered her greatest blessing, Caleb, Lucas, William and Christian. She is also remembered with great fondness by numerous nieces and nephews of whom she could not have been more proud.
Funeral Services for Phyllis will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 226 Washington Street, Menasha, with the burial to follow. Calling hours will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of the service. Donations in her honor can be made to Double Portion, 226 Washington St., Menasha, WI 54952

I was an intern at Pitney Bowes in the early 90s and Phyllis took me under her wing. I learnt a lot from her - she was an excellent chemist. I also got to go camping with her and the folks - great fun. That was 35 years ago but I still warmly remember her and us working side by side in the lab. Some people you feel blessed to know, even for a short time - and dear Phyllis is was one of them. God bless her!
