Obituary

Edward William Herbert Flenz, age 90 years and 4 months, was called home by his Lord on April 18, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton, WI. He was born December 4, 1925 in Neenah, Wisconsin, the son of Ferdinand and Henriette (Harder) Flenz. He was baptized into the Christian faith on December 20, 1925 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Neenah and confirmed on Palm Sunday, April 6, 1941. On August 6, 1944, while in the army, Ed married Stella Anna Kuehl, also of Neenah, at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. They met in the young people's group at Trinity Lutheran Church. Stella preceded Ed in death on July 14, 2011, after nearly 67 years of marriage. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Edward Robert and Michael William (Anita) Flenz.

Ed attended Trinity Lutheran School through eighth grade and one year at Neenah High School. He was learning woodworking at Neenah Vocational School when the United States entered World War II. He joined the U.S. Army at Ft. Sheridan, IL on April 26, 1944. During his time in the army, Ed served in the fields of artillery and combat support. He was stationed with the Fifth Army in Italy from Dec 23, 1944 to Aug 17, 1945. He also served at state-side posts in Oklahoma, Texas, and Virginia. He was awarded the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Army Occupation Medal (Italy), the American Theater Ribbon, the European/African/Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Ribbon. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of private first class at Ft. Meade, MD on May 4, 1946.

After discharge from the army, Ed was employed by Marathon Corporation (later American Can and James River) in Menasha for 42 years, working as a carpenter in the plant maintenance department. He retired as a journeyman carpenter in March of 1988. After retirement, Ed enjoyed time with family and friends and working around the house. He was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Neenah for many years, serving as financial secretary, trustee, and usher. In more recent years, he and Stella were members of Trinity Lutheran Church of Neenah. On August 16, 2004, Ed and his brothers Frank and Paul became members of the Neenah High School graduating class of 2004 and were awarded their diplomas in accordance with Wisconsin Act 73.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, wife Stella, brothers Frank and Paul, and sister Henriette (Hank) Lau.

Survivors include sister Ethel (James) Weyenberg, sons Edward and Michael Flenz, daughter-in-law Anita Flenz, two grandchildren (Phillip and Veronica), two great granddaughters, one great great grandson, and many nieces and nephews.

The visitation for Ed will be held on Sunday, April 24, 2016 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Neenah's Westgor Funeral Home, 205 W. Doty Avenue, Neenah.  The Christian Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 25, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 407 Oak Street, Neenah with military honors to immediately follow the service.  An additional time of visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.  Entombment will take place at the Shrine of Heaven Mausoleum in Greenlawn Memorial Park at 2:00 p.m. on Monday.
