ALVIN THUMS

Age 83, of Fremont, passed away Thursday, December 3, 2009, at Appleton Health Center. Alvin was born November 28, 1926, in Rib Lake, the son of Leo and Anna (Hoffmann) Thums. He grew up in Rib Lake and attended school there. Al was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Navy. He was united in marriage to Audrey Eckstein on September 20, 1947, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Neenah. Alvin was employed at P.H. Glatfelter (Bergstrom Division) for 42 years before his retirement as paper mill superintendent in 1989. He and Audrey retired to Lake Poygan from Neenah. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, bowling, traveling, and gardening. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Audrey; a son, Aaron (Peggy) Thums, Oshkosh; two daughters, Armella (Roger) Dana, Iowa, Anita (Wayne) Crary, Texas; grandchildren: Jennifer (William) Landry, Joseph (DeLane) Dana, Kallina (Clint) Dunkle, Michelle Crary, Chad (Jan) Stanelle; great-grandchildren: Matthew, Abigail, Chloe, Wesley; sisters: Florence Mann, Isabelle Wilhelms; brothers: Elmer and Chester (Louise). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Lawrence Schneider; sister, Adeline Yanko; sister-in-law, Sarah Thums; brothers-in-law: Andrew Mann, Walter Wilhelms. Funeral service for Alvin will be held on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Neenah with Rev. Paul L. Holte officiating. Friends will be received on Tuesday evening, December 8, from 4 until 8 P.M. at Neenah's Westgor Funeral Home, and again on Wednesday morning from 10 A.M. until the hour of service at church. Interment with full Military Honors will be in Clayton Cemetery.
