HARRIET SCHUBERT

Harriet Williams Schubert, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away Thursday, December 24, 2009, at Theda Clark Hospital, Neenah, Wisconsin. She was born March 11, 1921, in Evanston, Illinois, to the late William and Mabel (Penlerick) Williams, of England and Evanston. Harriet was a graduate of Evanston Township High School, where she was recognized for skills in music and writing, but particularly for outstanding promise as an artist. She was awarded full scholarship to the Harrison Art Academy in Chicago, Illinois, and graduated from Harrison in 1941, with special competence and honors for her work in watercolor. She subsequently studied and received certification from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1955, Harriet and her husband Charles , who was senior internal auditor with the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, were transferred from the K-C office in Chicago and moved with their four children to Neenah, Wisconsin, where both she and Charles immediately became proactive leaders in promoting and enabling parent "teacher collaboration to deepen and sustain excellence in the public school curriculum in the City of Neenah, K-12, particularly to broaden Neenahs public school education in music and the arts. Harriet took great pride in supporting her partner and husband, Charles, who served as President of the Neenah Parent Teachers Association Council and as a member of the Neenah School Board. Harriet and Charles were active in organizing and sustaining the Neenah Music Parents (Charles was its first president in 1959); Harriet led many committee activities through 1969, all critical to putting in place then nurturing the required curriculum to develop and sustain a symphony orchestra in the Neenah Public School System. Together, they also were seminal leaders at the founding of the Community Concert Association of Neenah-Menasha, which over time helped establish strong civic and business support for the Fox Valley Performing Arts Center in Appleton, Wisconsin. On moving to Neenah in 1955, Harriet continued as an artist continuing her professional training in Lawrence University programs and exhibiting locally through the Wisconsin Watercolor Association. Harriet , a resident of Island Shores, was a member of PEO Chapter EB, and a member of the Tuesday Club. Her musical talents found voice as a member of the Senior Choir at the Neenah First Presbyterian Church, where she sang continuously for 48 years. Harriet proudly joined Realco near its inception, noting that this real estate brokerage was founded in 1969 solely by women, all of whom, like herself, had made major contributions to improving and sustaining the quality of life in Neenah-Menasha and the greater Fox River Valley, making them particularly able to promote the many benefits of the area to prospective residents. Harriets beloved husband Charles preceded her in death in 1982, as did her sister Doris Williams Tall. She is survived by four children, two daughters-in-law, and one son-in law: Charles D. Schubert (Carol Schuh Schubert) of Chandler, Arizona; Dr. Lynda Schubert Bodman of Boston, Massachusetts; Denise Schubert Miller (Dr. Randall Miller) of Scottsdale, Arizona; and Peter W. H. Schubert (Susan Perrin Schubert) of New York City, New York. Two grandchildren: Charles P. Schubert (Cristina Maciel Schubert) of Chandler, Arizona and Jaymee Schubert Soni (Dr. Rajesh Soni) of Fountain Hills, Arizona ; and four great-grandchildren: Jayden, Kyle, and Logan Soni, and Charles J. Schubert. The family wishes to thank her personal nurse, K. Linda Hill, who lovingly cared for Harriet for over five years. We are forever indebted to her for unfailing friendship and devotion. Funeral Services for Harriet will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel, 200 Church Street, Neenah, with the Rev. Richard J. Moore officiating. A reception will follow the service. Family and friends are invited to a visitation Monday from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m., at Neenahs Westgor Funeral Home and again at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be sent to the Neenah Public School System in support of its music programs or to the Music Fund of the Neenah First Presbyterian Church.
