Obituary
Barbara A. Tungate, of Neenah, age 80, passed away on Friday, November 25, 2011 after a long battle with Alzheimers. She was born August 30, 1931, daughter of the late Alvin and Vivian (Taylor) Hauert, in Appleton and had been a life-long resident of the Fox Cities. She married Max Tungate, a former Post Crescent employee and he preceded her in death in 1992. Barb graduated from Appleton High School in 1949 and from Mt. Sinai School of Nursing in Milwaukee in 1951. As an adult learner she earned her BSN and a MSE from UW-Oshkosh. Her professional career included faculty positions at Mercy School of Nursing in Oshkosh and Coordinator of Continuing Education for UW-O College of Nursing. Barb is probably best remembered for her on-stage and off-stage dedication to local theatre groups. For more than 40 years she participated as actress, director and producer for Riverside Players, Attic Theatre and UW-Fox Valley. She was one of the founders and past president of Friends of Riverside Players; served multiple terms on Attics Board of Directors and as president. Barbara also directed the Highlighters, a group of singers/actors, which entertained throughout the community for over 25 years. As a member of the Congregational UCC Church of Neenah/Menasha she served on the Church Council, Missions and Stewardship Committee and was a member of their senior choir. She was an avid reader and a devoted grandma. Travel also became a priority during her retirement years. Memorable trips included England, Thailand, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Canada and Nova Scotia. Survivors include two sons: Kevin Tungate and his wife Cheryl, Kimberly; Brian Tungate and his wife Lynn, Menasha; two grandsons: Evan Tungate and Aaron Anusewski; one sister, JoAnn and Lee Belling, Appleton; a sister-in-law, Marion Hauert, Eau Claire; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Barb was preceded in death by three brothers: Hallie, Ralph and Jim. The funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 1, 2011, at the Congregational United Church of Christ of Neenah/Menasha, 1511 Nicolet Blvd., Neenah, with The Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith officiating. The visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until the hour of service. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. A memorial will be established in Barb's name. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Home Instead Senior Care and at Heartwood Homes in Appleton for all their compassionate care of Barb over the years.

I was so sorry to read of Barbara's passing. Although I haven't seen her in many, many years, we performed together at Riverside in "Barefoot in the Park" around 1968. She made an impression on me with her sense of humor and professionalism. I still keep a picture of her from a news clipping in my scrapbook. My sincere condolences to her family and friends. Tungate family, as a fox valley campus alumni, i recall Ms Tungate enlisted to join us in several of our musicals. it was the late 60's and i remember her as non-judgemental and accepting of us as amateur performers during this most divisive period. may you all reflect on her contributions to the campus, community, and, most importantly, the love she brought you.

Brian and family, So sorry to read of your mom's passing. She was a wonderful woman who greatly influenced myself and so many others in community theater. Her bright smile and sense of humor lit up a room and created memories that will live in the hearts of others for years to come. Deepest sympathy.
