Obituary

Barbara M. Sturtevant, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Geri-Care Cabin in Neenah. She was born on December 18, 1921 in Darien, Wisconsin, the daughter of the late A.H. and Nettie May (Heyer) Brown. Barbara graduated from Darien High School in 1939, married Douglas E. Sturtevant on September 20, 1941 in Cook County Illinois and after the War, settled in Whitewater, Wisconsin. They proudly raised their three sons, Barb was active in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and her boys' sports. She served as the Bloodmobile Coordinator for the Madison area Red Cross, and then worked as a claims adjuster for WPS Health Insurance. Barb and Doug moved to Portage, Wisconsin in 1986 where she guided tours for the Old Indian Agency House, worked with the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was the curator of the Zona Gale House. Barbara was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Portage and loved knitting, needlepoint, playing cards, baking, and spending time with her beloved grandchildren. Her sons have many fond memories of time spent at their cottage in the Rhinelander area, where Barbara loved to fish, and once landed a 52 inch Musky. She will be sadly missed by her sons: Stephen (Kathy), Neenah, Thomas (Sais), Brookfield, William (Angie), Madison; 9 grandchildren: Kari, Scott, Brady, Stephanie, Kyle, Thomas, Dylan, Julie, Nate, a great grandchild, Ivy, her sister, Rosemary Christman, Darien; brother, Arthur Brown, Fort Atkinson and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved husband, Douglas. A memorial service for Barbara will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. The family would like to thank the staffs of Geri-Care Cabin and ThedaCare at Home Hospice for their compassionate care and concern.
