ROGER SWEET

R. Duane Sweet, 82, of Neenah, passed away after a two-month struggle with cancer at Cherry Meadows Hospice in Appleton on January 31, 2010, with his family by his side. He was born November 10, 1927, in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, to the late Roger and Marion Sweet. Duane was a long-time member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Neenah-Menasha and sang in the church choir for over 25 years. Duane enlisted in the 5th Air Force and served overseas in the Japanese Theater from 1946-1949. He married Carol Mae Smith on July 18, 1953, in the Congregational Church in Neenah-Menasha. Duane was employed for 29 years as the Sales Manager for the former Courtney and Plummer " Four X Corporation. The next 14 years, he worked for the Wisconsin Concrete Pavement Association as Vice President of Marketing. His passion was singing, and Duane often referred to himself as a bar-room tenor . Other interests included fishing, golfing, playing pool at the Neenah Club, and singing with the Y-Nots Chorus. He is survived by his wife, Carol, and two sons: Randy (Cindy) Madison, and Tim (Julie) Clintonville; four grandchildren: Justin (Chris), Seattle, WA; Elisa (significant other, Peter) Evanston, IL; Tansy (fianc, Brian) Green Bay; and Camden, Clintonville. He is also survived by nephews and nieces: Don (Mary) Smith Wausau; Bob (Terrie) Smith Madison; Cheri Johnsen, McFarland, WI; and Kathy Connery, Pardeeville, WI. The funeral service for Duane will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at 11:00 AM at the Neenah-Menasha Congregational United Church of Christ, 1511 Nicolet Blvd, Neenah, with the Rev. Lynne Spencer-Smith presiding. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, from 9:00-11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Congregational United Church of Christ; the American Cancer Society; or Cherry Meadows Hospice, 2500 Heritage Woods Drive, Appleton, WI 54915.
