Obituary
The Good Lord took the hand of David Brian Smith, age 56 of Menasha, and led him Home to be with his son and his father on Saturday, December 12, 2015. He was born December 19, 1958 to Dorothy (Pagel) Smith-Mueller and the late William Smith in Neenah, and married Joann Smith on June 20, 1992. He worked for Whiting Paper Company for 34 years, retiring on November 1, 2011.
Dave had a strong love of God and His church. He was a selfless man who would do anything for others. His contagious smile and unique laugh will never be forgotten as those he loves remembers his love of life. “Family” would be the title of the book of Dave's life, as they were his number one priority. He was a proud father and a wonderful, caring, considerate husband. He enjoyed cooking for his family and taking meals to his mother and sister until his last day, and would often text his sisters a “Good morning my lovely ladies,” just letting them know how much he cherished them. He loved spending time with his family, playing catch with the kids, taking his daughter on motorcycle rides, watching his son's baseball games, and attending Christmas concerts. Thanksgiving was his favorite holiday because it was all about family time together.
Dave was also a very social person who enjoyed making all ages laugh. He was a very funny man with a great sense of humor and loved laughing himself. He also enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together or using any sort of gadget to make his life easier. He was the go-to handyman for both family and friends. He was always learning something new by either watching videos or reading books and also liked watching old westerns, including Gunsmoke and Bonanza. NASCAR, and Badger and Packer football were also favorites. He loved planting flowers, listening to music and putting up Christmas lights, and will be missed by his dogs, whom he loved to walk and give treats to. He was also very active in his water aerobics class at Experience Fitness.
Dave will be sadly missed by his wife, Joann; his children: Kristofer (Rodney Kaufman); Kaitlin; and Matthew Smith; his mother, Dorothy Smith-Mueller; his sisters: Carol (Richard) Lewitzke; Lynn (Wallace) Beversdorf; and Sara Huolihan. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews, including his “bestie” Doug (Kaitlin) Madel; Dani and Colin Huolihan; as well as his mother-in-law, Judy Smith and the rest of Joann's family, who were a very important part of his life. He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Dean; his father, William; his brother, Bill; his brother-in-law, Tom Huolihan; his step-father, John Mueller and his father-in-law, Ron Smith.
A Funeral Service for Dave will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 17, 2015 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 200 N. Commercial St., Neenah, Rev. Paul Holte officiating. A visitation will be held at church from 9:00 A.M. until the hour of service. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Dave's family would like extend a warm thank you to Dr. Patel and the staff at Aurora Bay Care for all of their care and compassion.
