Shirley Slomski
November 30, 1929 - November 18, 2025
Obituary
Local thrift stores lost a loyal customer on November 18, 2025.
Shirley Slomski came so close to celebrating her 96 birthday on Nov 30, missing it by just 11 days.
She passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her children in Fremont, WI.
She managed to escape the nursing home after all.
There will be lots of family and friends meeting Shirley at the pearly gates including her husband, Alvin saying “welcome my Fräulein” and their four sons; Mark, Patrick, Daniel and John as well as their son-in-law Jean-Claude and daughter-in-law Dottie. Her parents Ray Hoag and Violet Mayer and stepdad Walter Mayer will also welcome her along with her sister Joy, and her brothers Doug, Marvin and Jack.
If we know Shirley she will hold places in heaven for her remaining six children; Michael, Barbara (Jean-Claude), Val (Dave), Randy (Debra), Shelly (Tom) and Philip (Denise) as well as her 15 grandkids, 28 great-grandkids and 8 great-great grandkids. She will also reserve a place for her sister Beverly. And her very special “daughter” Gail.
Our mom had a life-long affair with Hostess Zingers, German potato salad and the occasional gin and tonic. Although she didn’t care too much for sports she enjoyed family gatherings to watch the Green Bay Packers. Believe it or not she rooted for Cal Ripken Sr and the Baltimore Orioles. And, she religiously watched the Kentucky Derby with her son Michael.
Truth be told, or Shirley's version is this: "I tried to do the best I could with what I had." Sometimes she succeeded and sometimes not. But she sure tried.
Shirley would be the first to say, life is short. You're born. You blink. And then it's all over." But she would also be the first to tell you that the last few years leading up to nearly 96 can be a bit long and tiresome!
Shirley had her share of travel and places she called home including in Alaska and California but Wisconsin was always home.
A Catholic Mass and celebration of life for Shirley will be held at a later date. Everyone who remembers our mom is asked to celebrate her life in their own way, shopping at Goodwill or Bethesda would be time well spent. Instead of flowers, Shirley would hope that you will do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone in her name.
The family would like to give a huge shout out to Lucas and caregivers from Theda Care at Home for their help and kindness to mom and the family. You are all our earthly angels!
