Obituary

Richard M. Raleigh, 86, of Oshkosh, passed away Saturday, October 10, 2026. Richard was born September 15, 1940, in Neenah, WI, the son of George and Maxine (Mohr). He grew up in Menasha and was a graduate of Menasha High School in 1958. He later graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a degree in social work. Throughout his career, he dedicated himself to serving the community as a social worker for Outagamie County.

Richard was a man of deep faith, incredible kindness, and had a wonderful sense of humor. He passed away, leaving behind a legacy of generosity and cherished memories.

Richard was a big reader with a lifelong love for the arts. He enjoyed old classic movies and Broadway plays. His dedication to the theater led him to volunteer for many years at the Performing Arts Center (PAC) in Appleton until his Parkinson’s made it hard for him to continue. Richard also loved to travel. Hawaii was his favorite destination, as he and his wife visited six times. He made memorable trips to New York for Broadway musicals and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and always had a special place in his heart for Door County.

Christmas was Richard’s favorite time of year. He spent countless hours carefully setting up his beloved Christmas Village and happily arranged for Santa Claus to visit his great-nieces and great-nephews. Later in life, while living at the Evergreen Retirement Community, he discovered a talent and passion for writing short stories.

Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ginny; his parents, George and Maxine (Mohr) Raleigh; his brother-in-law, Norbert Schemm; and his dear cats, Katie and Pepper. He is survived by his sister, Joanne Schemm and brother George, Jr. (Sharon) Raleigh; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will miss him dearly.

A memorial service for Richard will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at EVERGREEN RETIREMENT COMMUNITY CHAPEL 1130 WESTFIELD ST., OSHKOSH, WI. Visitation will be held Saturday at the Evergreen Chapel from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Richard’s honor may be directed to The Michael J. Fox Foundation Parkinson’s Research, or the Animal Hospital of Oshkosh.

Richard may be no longer with us, but he’s always in our hearts. We’ll always remember him, even though he’s gone. Richard touched many lives deeply, and each of us is a better person because of him. He achieved success that went far beyond money and fame.
