RAYMOND SMITH

On Sunday, January 9, 2022, Raymond A. Smith, age 98, took his final bow on the stage of life, one which he lived to the fullest. Born September 18, 1923, to the late Bert L. and Mayme J. Smith, Raymond was a native of Neenah, graduating from Neenah High School in 1941.

He was a pilot in the Army Air Corps (1943-46) having flown B-24 and B-26 bombers during the war. Raymond was a 1951 graduate of Lawrence University, having earned a degree in Psychology.

On May 31, 1947, he married the girl of his dreams, Elizabeth J. Hardt, a union that blessed them with 67 years, until her passing in January 2015. They were a devoted and nurturing couple who dedicated their lives to the betterment of young people in their community and across the globe.

Raymond was a loyal member of the First Presbyterian Church of Neenah for 78 years, where he served as an Elder, Deacon, Youth Group Advisor, and Sunday School Instructor.

He enjoyed a 36-year career at Kimberly Clark, but it was his dedication and leadership with the Boys Brigade that brought him the greatest happiness. Raymond served as Captain where he developed life-long friendships with the young men and their families, particularly in Scotland.

Until recently, he was involved with the EAA, where he held a Lifetime Membership. Raymond volunteered at Air Venture yearly, keeping alive his love of flying and connecting with pilots from around the world.

Locally, Raymond was a member of the Neenah Rotary Club and their Strive Program, where he mentored ‘At-Risk' youth at area high schools, and a former member of the Neenah Club.

Together, the Smiths had a strong affinity for Bjorklunden in Door County where they furthered their love of learning and appreciation for the Arts and Opera. They were long-standing supporters of the Fox Valley Symphony.

Raymond and Betty enjoyed their Neenah home, with a picturesque view of Lake Winnebago, until moving to The Heritage, which Raymond called ‘home' since 2003. He was an avid golfer, extensive reader, and frequent traveler – to Scotland and England, and more recently to France, Italy, and Greece.

Raymond was preceded in death by his brother, Carlton Smith; two sisters, Marjorie Smith and Doris Smith Cameron. He is survived by a niece and nephew, and many dear friends.

Neenah has been the fortunate beneficiary of Raymond's time, talent, and philanthropy, as he generously contributed to a myriad of charities, food pantries, and most notably, the Arts. His name remains an inspiration to many because of his wit, kindness, and positive demeanor.

Raymond Smith's life mirrored the Mission of Brigade: “To improve the quality of life in the community…teach respect and leadership…strengthen character and instill a sense of purpose and self-esteem.”  He believed in the process of adapting and responding to the ever-changing needs of youth.

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no Funeral Service. Memorials may be made in Raymond's name to a charity of choice.
