MARGARET GALLOWAY
May 13, 1925 - December 13, 2019
Obituary
Peg Galloway is now back in John's and her Lord's loving embrace. And now the blue Saab convertible and Bucky Red can go to their final resting place as well.
Peg (born Margaret Louise Peck, but always known as Peg or Peggy) passed away peacefully at the age of 94.5 on Friday the 13th, December 2019. She suffered a debilitating stroke on Monday December 9 and mercifully passed away quickly. We have lost another one of the “greatest generation”. Peg was the consummate wife, mother, daughter, and sister. She was known as the life-of-the party; queen of hospitality; constant giver of help and friendship; protector of her children and chauffer; and number one supporter of her mother, brother and sister, and her nieces and nephews. Her mother lived next door to the family for over 20 years until her passing.
Peg was born in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on May 13, 1925 to Evan and Hattie Peck. She was the middle of three children. She now joins in the after life her parents, older brother Gus (Edna) Peck and sister Nancy Hansen, father and mother-in-law Edwin and Genevieve Galloway, brothers and sisters-in-law Dave and Mary James, Ned and Carol Galloway, Dick and Pat Galloway, and brother-in-law Norm Erickson, and son-in-law Glen Bostedt. She is survived by her children and grandchildren; her sister-in-law Jean Erickson; and many nieces and nephews.
Peg was very active in high school and college in a number of social and civic activities. She graduated college with a degree in criminology. While attending UW-Madison, Peg (Alpha Phi) fell in love with John (Beta Theta Pi) who ironically grew up four blocks away in Fond du Lac. Peg and John were married on February 7, 1947. Together they raised six children, Karrie - Salt Lake City, Scott (Mary O) - Seattle, Tim (Siv Lindgren) - Neenah, Ted - Neenah, Meg - Madison, and Pat (Amy) - Neenah. They were also blessed with 11 grandchildren, Aaron (Kristine) and Celia Pietsch; Ethan (Hilarie), Cameron, Sofia, Erik, Annika, Andrea (Ryan Mosher) and Sam Galloway; and Schuyler and Colin Bostedt; and two great grandchildren Elena and Michael Galloway.
Peg and John moved to Neenah in the late 1940's where John joined his father and two brothers working at Neenah Milk Products, which would eventually become Galloway Company. With six children, and usually a dog, to raise Peg was constantly busy as a wife and mother. In mid-life she took up downhill and cross country skiing to be with her family. She booked July 28 for her annual waterskiing day – and prayed for wind and rain. Peg loved her house on the water with the big screened porch and dining table as it was the perfect spot for entertaining family and friends.
Peg was active in her husband's and children's activities including shoveling snow off the ice rink at the Neenah pool, hosting the season ending optimist Pram Sailing regatta and also Optimist summer picnic, den mother, girl scout leader and many others. She also volunteered with numerous local charities such as meals-on-wheels, Emergency Society, VNA and others. She also had a lively social scene with Tuesday Club, her long running luncheon club, bridge club, etc. However, she usually tried to have some part time work to earn some extra ‘pin money'. Her best job was as a World Book Encyclopedia sales person. Her commission got the family a dishwasher, and everyone had endless knowledge at their fingertips.
In their retirement years Peg and John travelled frequently – Peg gleefully, John not so much. They were able to go to Europe and Southeast Asia and to many sporting events in the US. They also enjoyed golf at North Shore Golf Club, playing tennis, watching grandchildren's activities and spending time with friends.
The family would like to thank the staff at the VNA who took such good care of Peg over the past several years at home, and the last three months at their assisted living facility; and to Theda Care Hospice who also provided support for Peg and the family during her final days. Special thanks to VNA staff and friends who visited in her last days; Dr. Steve Knaus for his support; and special caregiver Shirley for her unfailing love and friendship.
A mass in celebration of Peg's life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 11, 2020 at St. Margaret Mary Church, 600 Division St., Neenah, with Rev. Dennis Bergsbaken officiating. The visitation will held at the church from 9:00am until the time of the service and a lunch will be served following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made in memory of Peg to the Valley VNA, St. Margaret Mary Church, or a charity of your choice.
