Obituary

George Hargrave Crowell, age 104, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 16, 2022. He was born May 10, 1918, in Wilkinsburg, PA, son of the late George G. and Christina (Hargrave) Crowell.  George moved to Wisconsin when he was two years old and his family settled in Almond, WI.

George graduated from the University of Chicago with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He enlisted in the US Army during WWII and was stationed in Edgewood, Maryland. It was there that he met Miriam Jones and they were married on January 10, 1948. She preceded him in death on February 18, 1978. George married Karen Kiesow on September 2, 1982.

George was employed with Kimberly-Clark for over thirty years until his retirement.  He loved to travel the USA and Europe. George enjoyed living in Kent, England, for several years while working for Kimberly-Clark and he became very fond of his British neighbors. He had been an American Tree Farmer since 1955 and found “peace and comfort” (his words) at his cottage in Lakewood, WI. George was an active member of the Appleton Church of Christ, a faithful Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers fan, and he was an avid stamp collector.

Survivors include his wife, Karen; his daughter, Claire Ann (Jim) Hammer; Karen's children: Dawn (Gene) Reece, Donna (Bill) Behnke; three grandchildren: Jeffrey Hammer, Heather (Adam) Mader, Eugene (Makayla) Reece; a great-grandson, Kash; son-in-law, Peter B. Chiu; and two nieces and five nephews.

George was preceded in death by a daughter, Christina Crowell Chiu, and two sisters: Margaret Peck and Mary Janecek.

The funeral service for George will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, October 22, 2022, at Menasha's Westgor Funeral Home. The visitation will be held from 1:00PM until the hour of service. Full Military Honors will follow with the Neenah/Menasha Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be at Quantico National Cemetery, Quantico, VA. In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established for ThedaCare Hospice in George's name.

George's service will be livestreamed at the time of service on Westgor Funeral Home's Facebook page.
