JANE CAMPBELL

Obituary

Jane Vallance Campbell, née Elder, 86, passed away Thursday August 3, 2023, in Appleton. She was born December 5, 1936, in London, Ontario, daughter of the late John and Helen (Nolan) Elder.

After completing high school, Jane received her degree from St. Josephs School of Nursing in Hamilton, Ontario. After graduation, she moved to the United States, ending up in Cleveland, Ohio. There, she met her future spouse, John, who was in medical school at Case Western Reserve. After completing medical school, John volunteered (during the Vietnam War) for the US Air Force, and the couple lived in some exotic locales, including on the islands of Hawaii and Guam. Following John's discharge, the couple moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where John completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic, and the couple had their first two boys, Jeffrey and Michael. A few years later, John and Jane moved the family to Neenah, Wisconsin, where they had their third son, Brett. Jane and John spent the following 50 years working, raising their children, volunteering, socializing, and contributing to their community. Jane was a parishioner at St. Margaret Mary's in Neenah for years, and she loved her church and her faith community.

Jane lived a life that was filled with trials as well as triumphs. She had an indominable spirit and was deeply devoted to her family and friends. Whether or not you wanted to hear her opinion, you were going to hear her opinion. While this could be vexing at times, the sting always came out when one reflected on the source of her insistence: her deep love and concern for your well-being. Jane was very outgoing and loved socializing; she brightened every event she attended. Jane also loved her dogs, and had many pets over the years, including Kam (basset hound), Bach (black lab), Molly (Chesapeake Bay retriever), and Holly (another Chessie).

Jane is survived by her loving husband of 59 ½ years, John: her son Jeffrey (Olga), grandson Slava (Skye) and granddaughters Lara and Ariadna: her son Michael, granddaughters Nicole and Jaiden, and daughter-in-law Rebecca Campbell: and her son Brett (Michelle), grandsons Ethan and Christian. Jane is further survived by her brothers: Paul (Ali) and Tony (Michelle) Elder. Jane was preceded in death by her father, John Elder, and her beloved mother, Helen.

A Mass of Christian burial for Jane will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday August 8, 2023, at ST. MARGARET MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 620 DIVISION  St, Neenah, with Fr. Nonito Barra officiating. Visitation will be held at the church Tuesday morning beginning at 9:00 AM until the 11:00 AM Mass.

Jane's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff and community at Touchmark as well as Compassus Hospice for the dedicated care they provided for Jane in the final weeks of her life.

Jane was fiercely loved by her spouse, children, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and her friends. She cannot be replaced, and her absence will leave a large hole in all of our lives. We are left to reflect on the fact that we have been blessed with, and should be eternally grateful for, the time that we were fortunate enough to share with her. And we make one final promise to our dearest Jane: we will always “watch out for the other guy.”

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Jane.  My mother,  Marilyn Maiorana, and Jane were very close friends. They graduated together from the St. Joseph’s Hospital Nursing program in London Ontario. They remained the closest of friends ever since. It was so great to have Jane come to London for so many Canadian Thanksgivings. I know that she loved being here and all of us loved having her.  Several times as a child, my parents and I would stop in Neenah to visit Jane and her wonderful family, on our way to Minneapolis to visit relatives. Those great memories are permanently etched in my mind. Jane was truly a beautiful human being and will be dearly missed. My deepest condolences to Dr. Campbell and the entire family. Paul Maiorana
