KAREN BUHL

KAREN BUHL

April 03, 1947 - February 17, 2025

Obituary

Karen Jane (Schwandt) Buhl was a loving wife, mother, sister, mentor, friend, and ally to many. Born on April 3rd, 1947 to Carlton “Cully” and Hildegard “Babe” Schwandt (Krueger). Karen was always ready to share her love and God's gifts with the world. Karen graduated from Appleton West High School, class of 1965 and started working for the Appleton Chamber of Commerce and then Ford Motor Credit. She married the love of her life, James Buhl, on July 24th, 1971, and together they grew their family to five. Karen spent over 50 years working as an active, fully engaged, devoted and loving mother. She valued gathering around the table as a family and was always ready to give thanks.

She was a woman of faith who enjoyed being an active member of her church community, Bethany Lutheran located at 530 West Parkway Blvd; Appleton, WI 54911.

Karen enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends, sharing laughs and stories, and making many cherished memories. She was always ready for a game. Whether it be playing board games, getting together with her canasta friends, playing Old Maid with her grandchildren or those who may have even lost to her in foosball. Karen was a master of the arts of gardening and cooking, always creating beautiful colors and aromas to fill everyone's soul. In the afternoon summer sun, she'd be on the front porch sharing glad tidings with neighbors. Her giggles were contagious, her many “surprises” were full hearted, and her care for everyone around her went beyond words.

On February 17th, 2025, this angel left the world and went to her heaven with her adoring husband holding her by his side. The sight of her beautiful kind smile and the embrace of her hugs were like magic and will forever be in our memories.

Karen is survived by her husband of 53 years of marriage and three children, Timothy, Michael (Dana), and Amanda (Jeffrey). Six grandchildren brightened her world: Emma, Grace, Avery, Autumn, Flannery, and Gus.

She is survived by her sister, Kathy Van Handle (Robert), in addition to her two other brothers in law, three nieces, and one nephew. Karen had so many circles of friends which she considered to be extended family as well.

Karen was proceeded in death by her parents Carlton and Hildegard Schwandt, parents in law Norbert and Mildred Buhl as well as sister-in-law Sharyn Buhl.

A Celebration of life will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Appleton Wisconsin on Friday March 7th. Visitation is from 9:30am until 11am followed by service.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in honor of Karen at Bethany Lutheran for their “Our Shepard” childcare program.  Karen had such love, kindness and care for those she knew. Her impact and memory will continue in our hearts.

Jim, I am so sorry for your loss.  It seems Karen was taken too soon. Noticed she was a AHS Grad. She was in my brothers class of 65. I was a year right behind her ‘66. Take care. Mom and Millie will welcome her.
