ALICE SMITH

Alice Jean Smith, of Neenah, age 91, died Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Rennes Health Center in Appleton. She was born July 22, 1923, in Sparta, WI, daughter of the late Herbert H. and Delia (Spade) Smith. Her mother died in December, 1987, and her father died in May, 1993. Alice Jean attended and graduated from St. Paul Lutheran Grade School in Wisconsin Rapids. In 1939, the family moved to Neenah where she attended Neenah High School as a senior. After graduating from High School, she completed a secretarial course at Badger Business School in Green Bay. Ms. Smith was a secretary all her life and worked in several offices in the Valley. She retired from Lawrence University in Appleton where she worked as the Assistant Alumni Director. In 1977, she received one of the University's Distinguished Service Awards. Alice Jean and her parents were "short" on family, but they valued and appreciated the wonderful friends and neighbors they were fortunate to have in Neenah. Ms. Smith was a traveler and has done a great deal of it. Every time she left home, where she told her folks "if I like it, I won't be back." It turned out that Neenah remained top on the list; she couldn't wait to get back to Neenah. The very favorite trip that she went on was to the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Albuquerque, NM, where she went up in a balloon. Alice Jean was a very generous and loving person. She always helped others in need. Recently, she donated to the City of Neenah, enough money to create a new park on the shore of Lake Butte des Morts on North Lake Street. Alice Jean did so in honor of her mom and dad, Herb and Dolly Smith. She chose to donate the money for the creation of the park because the people of Neenah have always been very good to her family. Alice Jean and her parents loved to spend time in the city's parks and hope by the creation of the new park, many others would have great memories like she had. Alice Jean was the last member of her immediate family. She is survived by many friends and the wonderful Herb and Dolly Park in Neenah, WI, for all to enjoy. Alice Jean was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Neenah. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, on Monday, September 15, 2014 at Neenah's Westgor Funeral Home, with Rev. Paul Holte officiating. The visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the hour of service. In lieu of flowers, all memorial gifts are to be given to the charity of your choice.
