CHARLES KING

Gene died on September 30, 2017 after a prolonged struggle with Alzheimer's. He was born on March 2, 1936 in Houston, Texas where he lived for over 30 years. He married his childhood sweetheart, Betty on May 31, 1958. They raised four children. Gene was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother. He put his family first in his heart, thoughts, and actions. He was a friend to many and always had time to listen and share a story. He will be remembered for his quick wit and his hearty laugh, which he never held back.

Gene received a BBA degree in Accounting from Baylor University in Waco, Texas in May of 1958. He began his work career at Tennessee Gas Transmission Company (Tenneco) as a junior accountant. After a couple of years, he transferred to Computer Services to keep up with advancing technology. He worked at Texas Instruments, C. B. Southern and Electronic Data Systems before joining Kimberly Clark in December of 1974. After 24 years in Computer Services (IT), he retired in March 1998. His work career took him from Texas to California, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and London, England. He and Betty retired to Flat Rock, NC and spent 14 years enjoying retirement, traveling, and making many new friends before moving back to Neenah, WI in 2012. Throughout his life, he was involved in many church and community activities.

Gene served in the Texas National Guard from November 1958 to April 1966. He served on active duty at Fort Polk, LA in 1960-1961 during the Berlin Crisis.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty; son Paul (Laura Beer), Golden, CO; son Todd “TK,” Kaukauna, WI; daughter Kelley (Nic Bartman), Neenah, WI; grandchildren: Sullivan King, Emily Jamison; and Ayva King. He is also survived by his sister, Allene McLeod; brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Mary Ann Howell; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughter Jennifer; parents, Ed and Thelma King; in-laws, John and Beth Mooney; and brother-in-law Bob McLeod.

A memorial service for Gene will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, 107 W. Doty Ave., Neenah. A visitation will be held from 4:30 P.M. until 6:30 P.M. on Friday, October 6, 2017 at Neenah's Westgor Funeral Home, and again on Saturday at the church from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of the service. A private family burial service will be held later at Oak Hill Cemetery in Neenah.
