GARY SALZMANN
July 17, 1951 - June 21, 2024
Obituary
Gary Robert Salzmann, 72, of Neenah, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Friday, June 21, 2024. Gary was born on December 17, 1951, to Gertrude; Alex Salzmann in Chicago, Illinois. He married Sue Burke on February 18, 1995, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Neenah.
Gary worked for 30 years at Webex in Neenah as a machinist/welder until his retirement in 2009.
Gary was an avid photographer who could always be counted on to capture important events in pictures. Gary loved trains and spent countless hours watching and photographing trains in switch yards and going down the tracks. He would frequently choose driving directions that would take him past his favorite train watching spots so he could see the trains along the way. During retirement, he spent hours planning and working on his large model train layout in his basement at home. Gary also spent many years owning and riding BMW motorcycles. He enjoyed going to BMW motorcycle rallies all over the country, and he took advantage of the opportunity to indulge another passion: camping. He'd often camp in a tent while attending his motorcycle rallies. Gary developed a love for boxer dogs after he and Sue got their first boxer, Josie. Having Josie, along with dog-sitting another family member's boxer, Abby, led to Gary's and Sue's involvement in fostering boxers for Green Acres Boxer Rescue. They helped home several boxers as part of the Rescue (which included keeping a few of the fosters).
In addition to his wife, Gary is survived by three daughters: Suzy (Joe) Matusiewicz, Jamie (Jeffrey) Thorn, and Colette Salzmann; one son: Joe (Stephanie) Salzmann; two step-daughters: Kathy (Rob) Woyak and Shelly (Brad James) Burke; twelve grandchildren: Joey, Frankie, Cassandra, Alexander, William, Benjamin, Taylor, Michael, Jon, Adriana, Kaitlyn and Kendal; two step-grandchildren: Jessie and Wil; two sisters-in-law: Carol (Don) Koski, and Deb Salzmann; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers: Chester Salzmann and Wayne Salzmann. Gary's family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and staff for the compassionate care Gary received in recent months, including: ThedaCare Regional Medical Center – Neenah, ThedaCare at Home, Eden Meadows: Rehabilitation – Oshkosh, Aurora Medical Center Oshkosh, Lakeshore Manor Assisted Living, ThedaCare Hospice, Dr. Kurt Bloomhuff and Dr. Thomas Klinkhammer.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 11:00 am at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 620 Division Street, Neenah, WI 54956. A visitation will be held before the service beginning at 9:00 am.
