DANIEL HOKS

August 11, 1948 - January 17, 2023

Obituary

Daniel (Dan) L. Hoks, age 74, passed away on Tuesday, January 17th, after an 11-year battle with non-smokers lung cancer. Dan was born on August 11, 1948, in Neenah, WI, to Eugene and Dorothy Hoks. He married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Dorschner, on June 6, 1970, and they celebrated 52 years together. Dan graduated from Menasha High School in 1966. He excelled in football and track, and even held a 34-year school record in the 200 meter dash. Dan graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point with multiple science degrees. He began and ended his 34-year teaching and coaching career in the Menasha School District. As the head track coach, Dan was extremely proud to be able to coach the young man who finally broke his 200 meter dash record.

Dan enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting up north on family land and staying at The Shack. He was also the president of the Appleton Rifle and Pistol Club for many years. Dan was a very accomplished competitive rifle marksman, including long-range, high-power and indoor small bore.

Dan also took great pride in watching his grandson, Griff, run out onto the baseball field or strap on catching gear while wearing Dan's former lucky number 13. Dan's love and dedication to his wife and daughter could only be eclipsed by the joy he found in spending time with his grandson.

Dan is survived by his loving wife, Bev; his daughter, Sarah (Benjamin) Kohls; and his grandson, Griffith. He is also survived by his brother, David (Jeanne) Hoks; niece, Amanda Hoks; nephew, Christopher (Amanda) Hoks; and their children: Spencer, Atlas and Haley; Sister-in-law, Pamela Hites Dorschner; nephew, Jamie (Kathy) Hites and their son Benjamin; and his fishing buddy and brother-in-law, Steven Kiser.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents; Bev's parents, Larry and Janet Dorschner; his sister-in-law, Barbara Kiser; and his brother-in-law, Larry Dorschner Jr.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church at 473 7th Street in Menasha. Visitation will be held from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Timothy Lutheran Church or the A.R.P.C.

Dan's family would like to thank Dr. William Conkright and his team at Thedacare Cancer Center. After his initial diagnosis, they gave Dan 11 more years of life instead of what should have been 11 months. Thank you to Pastor Skarsten for being with the family for this entire journey. Thank you to his caregivers from Ascension At Home Palliative Care, as well as Neenah and Green Bay Compassus Hospice. To his care team at Carolina Assisted Living - your compassion and care went above and beyond...you are appreciated beyond words.

Bev, Sarah and family: We are truly saddened to hear of Dan‘s passing. Dan’s ever present and infectious smile are forever etched into our minds. I was blessed to come into contact with Dan as a new teacher at Menasha High School in the spring of 1975. Dan was a role model to me as I entered the teaching and coaching profession. The patience that Dan showed me as a first year teacher helped to curb my nerves and prompt me to feel welcomed and I value Dan’s life lessons even more to this day. Little did I know that my decision to coach track and field at Menasha High would give me an even better look at how to live life as a teacher/coach which Dan so expertly modeled. Dan treated each and every student and athlete with dignity and respect. Dan was always at the entry to the track or the field house on a nightly basis as students reported for practice . Dan would greet each and every athlete with his smile, dignifying their presence by calling them by their first name. My wife Janis and I grew to be good friends with Dan and Bev during the early years in Menasha. Our hearts are filled with so many great memories of time spent with Dan and Bev in good fun and laughs including late night trips to Mister Donut. Bev, Sarah and family may peace be with you as you celebrate the life of a very special man. Thanks be to God for allowing me to steal time with Dan Hoks under the guise of coaching track and field. For years I would tell my students and athletes to find somebody that helps make you better a better person. As I reflect back on our years in Menasha I realize now that I was blessed to have found Dan, he was a man that made me a better teacher/coach/person just as he did for so many other “Bluejays” in the classroom and on the track. Rest in peace Dan! Joe and Janis Dye

I am a 1989 Graduate of Menasha High School. I had Mr. Hold as my Biology teacher, as well as my Track and Field Coach as a Senior. He hounded me my first three years while I tried out unsuccessfully for baseball, and finally broke me. I thoroughly enjoyed not only his style of instruction, both on the field as well as in the classroom, but his passion for the outdoors that we shared through many hours of conversations about bow hunting. To this day, Mr. Hold remains one of my favorite teachers of all time. I am extremely sorry I am unable to attend his service, as I will be out of town on a family trip, but please accept my sincere condolences.
