Obituary

Frederick “Fritz” Charles Wachter passed away with the quiet strength and dignity that defined his life—a man remembered for his strong demeanor, yet unwavering in his devotion as a husband, father, and grandfather.

Born as the youngest son of Raymond and Agnes Wachter, Fritz carried with him deep and abiding pride in his roots in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin where he worked the family business (Wachter’s Service Station), competed in athletics, and graduated from Sheboygan Falls High School. Fritz pursued his college education at UW-Oshkosh, where fate brought him to Audrey (Madison), the woman who would become his wife and partner for 65 years. Upon graduating college, he started his teaching career in Ashwaubenon, WI. A couple months later he answered the call of the Korean War draft, an experience that shaped his discipline and lifelong sense of duty.

Following his military service in Korea, Fritz and Audrey settled in Neenah WI where they built a life grounded in commitment to community and dedication to their church – Peace Lutheran Church. Audrey also began her career in education before choosing to devote herself fully to raising their two sons, Jeff and Rich.

Fritz dedicated his 30-year career to teaching middle school physical education in the Neenah School District, and also enjoyed coaching football, basketball, and track and field. He influenced generations of students with high standards and expectations, and discipline, which laid the foundation for many successful Neenah High School athletes.

Though Fritz was known for his tough nature, those closest to him understood that beneath it lay a deep well of pride, and love for God, country, and family. He and Audrey were constant supporters of their sons and later their grandchildren, rarely missing important football or basketball games, cross country races or track meets. Their quiet presence in the stands spoke volumes.

In his later years, Fritz’s devotion to Audrey became one of the clearest expressions of his character. As she faced the challenges of dementia and eventually moved into memory care, he remained steadfast – visiting her often, offering comfort, and honoring the life they had built together until her passing in 2024.

Fritz found some of his greatest joy in simpler moments—time spent at the family cabin in Mountain, Wisconsin, and long, peaceful hours fishing off his pontoon boat on Star Lake. These were the places where he relaxed and reflected on a life shaped by service, family, and the love of nature.

He will be remembered not for grand estures, but for the constancy of his presence, the strength of his commitments, and the quiet pride he carried in his family and his beginnings.

Fritz is preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Agnus; his wife, Audrey; and sister Charlene.

He is survived by his older brother Richard “Dick” Wachter; sons Jeff Wachter (Kathy), Rich Wachter (Shelly); and beloved grandchildren Ben Wachter, Amanda Wachter, Christian Wachter (Estefi), and Karl Wachter (Maddy).

He is deeply missed.
